Season begins 🎉

No Director on Duty: A CBF representative will be present to start games, but will not make rulings during play. Captains are expected to resolve routine issues in good faith at the table. Any irregularities, scoring disputes, or ethics concerns must be reported to admin@cbf.ca within 24 hours of the match.
League Rules & Details
RealBridge requirement: All players must have audio + video enabled. Test ahead of time here: RealBridge camera/mic test.
1Format, Schedule & Scoring

Platform: All matches are played on RealBridge. Camera and microphone must be enabled throughout the match.

Match Night & Time: Every Thursday at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Match times are fixed.

Season Structure: Nine (9) weeks of regular-season round-robin play, followed by two (2) weeks of semifinals and two (2) weeks of finals, per the published schedule.

Boards & Scoring: Regular-season matches are 20 boards, scored on the WBF 20-VP IMP scale. Playoff matches are 40 boards, played over two consecutive weeks.

Divisions:

  • 10–16 teams: one division, each team plays 9 opponents by random draw.
  • 17+ teams: two divisions, each playing 7–9 matches depending on team count.
  • Fewer than 10 teams: the League Organizer may modify the format (e.g., double round-robin). Registered teams will be notified before play begins.
📝 If a division has an odd number of teams, some teams may have a bye. A bye is not a forfeit and does not reduce a team’s fee.

Score Posting: Scores will be posted within 48 hours of each match. Captains are responsible for verifying accuracy.

Prizes: Cash prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the League. The total prize pool will be no less than 25% of total team entry fees collected. Distribution among finishing positions will be announced by the League Organizer based on final structure.

2Registration, Fees & Non-Member Surcharge

Registration Deadline: March 12, 2026. A minimum of five (5) teams per division is required for that division to run.

Entry Fee: $200 CAD per team, payable at the time of registration.

⚠️ No refunds will be issued if a team withdraws or forfeits. There is no fee reduction for schedules that include a bye.

Non-CBF Members: Players are not required to be CBF members. However, any player who is not a current CBF member must pay an additional $15 non-member surcharge for the season, payable at registration.

3Eligibility & Team Composition

Teams consist of 4 to 8 players. You do not need to be Canadian or reside in Canada to participate.

Participation is open to all players who are not currently under disciplinary sanction or suspension by the CBF, the ACBL, or any other recognized bridge governing body.

Each player may be registered on only one (1) team for the season.

🔴 CBF Membership: Regular players do not need to be CBF members. However, substitutes must be current CBF members in good standing — this requirement applies regardless of the team’s general membership status.
4Captain’s Duties

Each team must designate a captain. The captain is responsible for:

  • Registering the team by March 12 and ensuring all roster details are accurate.
  • Submitting all convention cards by March 15.
  • Verifying the accuracy of posted match scores (posted within 48 hours of each match).
  • Reporting any score errors or concerns promptly to admin@cbf.ca.
  • Notifying CBF in advance of any substitute players (see Substitution Policy).
5Lateness, Forfeits & Attendance

Out of respect for all participants, a strict lateness policy applies:

  • 10 minutes late: 5 IMP penalty assessed against the late team.
  • Each additional 5 minutes: An additional 3 IMP penalty per interval.
  • 30 minutes late: The match is forfeited.

Lateness penalties are applied to the match IMP score before conversion to Victory Points.

🚨 Serial Lateness: Any team that is late more than twice during the season may face increased IMP penalties, VP adjustments, or other disciplinary measures at the League Coordinator’s discretion — even if the lateness is only a few minutes.

Forfeited matches are scored 14 VP for the non-forfeiting team and 0 VP for the forfeiting team. This score is not subject to adjustment.

The Coordinator may waive or modify these rules at their discretion to address exceptional circumstances.

6Online Play Procedures (Undo, Alerts, Conduct)

Undos: Permitted in the auction only, and only if partner has not yet made a bid. Undos are not permitted during the play of the hand.

Hesitations: Online delays and hesitations are a normal part of online bridge and do not, by themselves, constitute unauthorized information (UI).

Alerts: Players must alert and explain their own bids. Please over-alert rather than under-alert to ensure full disclosure. Alerts must be typed in the alert box so that both opponents receive the same information simultaneously.

💡 Players are expected to be patient and courteous. Not all participants are equally experienced with RealBridge, and technical interruptions may occasionally occur.
7Substitution Policy

Each team is permitted one (1) substitute per season.

  • Substitutes must be current CBF members in good standing.
  • Substitutes may play for only one (1) team during the season.
  • Substitutes may not enter or leave a match in progress.
  • Substitutes may not play in playoff matches.

The captain must email admin@cbf.ca before the match in which the substitute will play, providing the substitute’s name and relevant details.

8Rulings & Appeals

There is no Director on duty during match play. Captains should resolve routine issues in good faith at the table.

Any irregularities, ethical concerns, or disputes that cannot be resolved by the captains must be reported to admin@cbf.ca within 24 hours of the match. The League Coordinator (or a designated committee) will issue a ruling based on the information provided.

Appeals: Any ruling may be appealed. An appeal must be:

  • Submitted in writing within the timeframe specified by the League Coordinator.
  • Accompanied by an appeal deposit of $100 CAD.
Deposit outcome: If the appeal is upheld or deemed to have merit, the $100 deposit is refunded. If the appeal is deemed frivolous or without reasonable basis, the deposit is forfeited. The decision on appeal is final.
