Le CNTC-A est l’événement phare des Championnats canadiens de bridge.
Un peu d’historique. En 1968 et 1971, des séries éliminatoires ont eu lieu pour sélectionner l’équipe du Canada pour les Olympiades mondiales par équipes. Le premier CNTC a été tenu à Toronto en 1977, avec chaque province représentée par un champion provincial. Le format de l’événement a changé en 1980, et les équipes devaient alors se qualifier aux niveaux du club, de l’unité et de la zone avant d’atteindre le Championnat canadien. En 2001, les Finales d’unité ont été éliminées, tandis que les Finales de zone ont été éliminées en 2009.
Les participants doivent être membres en règle de la FCB. Les équipes doivent s’inscrire au préalable pour le Championnat canadien, et payer les frais d’inscription non remboursables pour le tournoi à la ronde au plus tard à la date limite indiquée dans la documentation.

Les gagnants du CNTC-A reçoivent le Trophée Mark Molson, créé en 2011. Membre du Temple de la renommée de la FCB, Mark Molson est décédé en 2006 à l’âge de 56 ans; il a été un grand joueur canadien qui, parmi ses nombreuses réalisations, a remporté le CNTC sept fois. Avant 2011, les gagnants du CNTC-A recevaient le Trophée Sam Gold. Sam Gold est un autre membre du Temple de la renommée qui a été le deuxième joueur canadien a obtenir le statut de Maître à vie, et a été « Mr. Bridge » pour plusieurs générations de québécois.
Après ratification par le Conseil d’administration de la FCB, l’équipe gagnante reçoit une subvention pour représenter le Canada au Championnat du monde par équipes open de cette année-là. Le Trophée Eric R. Murray est attribué à l’équipe représentant le Canada dans les équipes open des Championnats mondiaux de bridge (anciennement Olympiade mondiale), tandis que le Trophée Percy Sheardown est attribué à l’équipe représentant le Canada au Bermuda Bowl.
