Club Qualifying — COPC & CNTC
Everything your club needs to run qualifying games and apply for a sanction for the Canadian Open Pairs Championship and Canadian National Team Championships.
Club qualifying games are the first level of competition toward the Canadian Championships. Review the information for each event below, then use the single application form to request a sanction for one event or both.
Stratification
The COPC is an Open Pairs event with no set flights. For masterpoint purposes only, a club may stratify its qualifying game using whichever strata it wishes. Qualification is based solely on the A – Open stratification.

Qualifying Criteria
Any pair finishing in the top 50%, including ties, along with any other pair achieving an average score, qualifies for the National Final.
Players qualify as individuals. They may play—and are encouraged to play—in as many COPC club qualifying games as they wish and may play with different partners each time. Partnerships are formed when players register for the National Final.

Reporting
At the end of each month, the club must report all qualifying games held during that month to the Canadian Bridge Federation. If more than one qualifying game is held during the month, the reports may be submitted together in a single mailing, along with payment covering the total sanction fees.
ACBL reporting policy: A club that does not submit its game report within 15 days following the event will be assessed a US$25 late charge and suspended until the required report, fees and late charges are received by the CBF Coordinator. When a club holds multiple qualifying games during a month, the CBF permits the reports and fees for all games to be submitted together at the end of the month, or no later than December 31.
Club Qualification
The first level of competition consists of qualifying games held at sanctioned clubs across Canada and awards red points. Club qualification is required for CNTC-A, CWTC, CSTC and CMTC. No qualification is required for CNTC-B or CNTC-C.

Flights
CNTC-A has no masterpoint restriction. CNTC-B and CNTC-C are restricted to fewer than 3,500 and 1,000 masterpoints respectively, as of September 1. Games may be stratified across A, B and C, or clubs may hold separate qualifying games for each flight.
Qualifying Criteria
A team qualifies if it:
- Wins at least half of its matches—a win by any margin counts as a full win and a tie counts as half a win; or
- Finishes in the top 50% of the teams entered, based on the scoring system used.
A player qualifies by playing at least one session for a team that achieves a qualifying position and may then play on the team of their choice at the Canadian Championships.
Reporting
Clubs must report qualifying games monthly to the Canadian Bridge Federation. A qualification list is generated by the ACBL during the first week of January and posted on the CBF website.
Reports not submitted within 15 days of the event are subject to a US$25 late charge under ACBL policy, and the club will be suspended until the required reports and fees are received.
