Percy Sheardown<\/p><\/div>\n

Percy (Shorty) Sheardown, membre du Temple de la Renomm\u00e9e de l\u2019ACBL, fut le premier grand joueur canadien, le plus grand d\u2019apr\u00e8s le regrett\u00e9 Ralph Cohen. Il \u00e9tait un brillant joueur de carte et a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier ma\u00eetre \u00e0 vie canadien, en 1948.<\/p>\n

Sheardown a remport\u00e9 plusieurs titres incluant en 1936 et 1951 le troph\u00e9e Chicago (aujourd\u2019hui le Reisinger) et en 1964 et 1965 les \u00e9quipes Spingold Master Knockout.<\/p>\n

La plupart de ses victoires dans les ann\u00e9es 50 et 60 \u00e9taient avec son partenaire Bruce Elliott et, durant cette p\u00e9riode, leur paire \u00e9tait une des meilleures en Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Leur \u00e9quipe avec Eric Murray et Sami Kehela est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme le meilleur quatuor canadien de tous les temps. Cette formation a remport\u00e9 le Spingold en 1964 et a d\u00e9fendu avec succ\u00e8s son titre en 1965, devenant \u00e0 ce jour le seul quatuor \u00e0 accomplir cette prouesse.<\/p>\n

Sheardown a remport\u00e9 en 1964 le troph\u00e9e Fishbein, pour le joueur ayant eu le plus de succ\u00e8s lors du National d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, remportant le Spingold et terminant deuxi\u00e8me dans les paires Life Masters avec Elliot.<\/p>\n

Shorty \u00e9tait un fantastique d\u00e9clarant et d\u00e9fenseur et sans aucun doute un des plus grands joueurs de \u00ab\u00a0matchpoint\u00a0\u00bb et de \u00ab\u00a0board a match\u00a0\u00bb de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Ses habilet\u00e9s exceptionnelles \u00e9taient reconnues par les experts de son temps, incluant ses partenaires occasionnels Ely Culbertson et Waldemar von Zedtwitz.<\/p>\n

Il a repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 le Canada deux fois dans les \u00e9quipes d\u2019Olympiades mondiales, remportant en 1968 une m\u00e9daille de bronze \u00e0 Deauville, France.<\/p>\n

Sheardown \u00e9tait gradu\u00e9 en \u00e9tudes classique de l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Toronto avec une affinit\u00e9 naturelle pour les langues. Il a servi outre-mer lors de la IIe<\/sup> guerre mondiale et, ayant refus\u00e9 une promotion, devint un des meilleurs interrogateurs de prisonniers de guerre.<\/p>\n

Post\u00e9 \u00e0 Londres, il continua sa paire de bridge avec le regrett\u00e9 Brigadier Donald Farquharson \u00e0 Crockford\u2019s. C\u2019\u00e9tait bizarre pour un anglais de voir un grad\u00e9 inf\u00e9rieur expliquer au brigadier comment l\u2019officier sup\u00e9rieur s\u2019\u00e9tait fourvoy\u00e9.<\/p>\n

La paire Sheardown\u2013Farquharson \u00e9tait si efficace qu\u2019il y a eu \u00e0 Crockford\u2019s une pluie de plaintes de tricherie contre eux. \u00c9ventuellement, les plaintes sont mortes de mort naturelle lorsque les autres joueurs ont r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que cette paire \u00e9tait un partenariat extr\u00eamement efficace et que leur honn\u00eatet\u00e9 \u00e9tait au-dessus de tout soup\u00e7on.<\/p>\n

Sheardow a pass\u00e9 la plus grande partie de sa vie \u00e0 Toronto comme propri\u00e9taire du Club de bridge St-Clair, qui lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 offert par les membres \u00e0 son retour des combats de la IIe<\/sup> Guerre Mondiale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
